"Dickie and Family, My deepest sympathy on the loss of your father. I played on his first Little League team back in the 50's with Dickie and David, and I've always remembered how much everyone liked and respected him. He was a great coach and set a good example for all of us. When someone mentions Little League today, I still think about Mr. Russell and how much fun we had. "On behalf of the Kennett family, may I extend our deepest sympathies on the loss of your father and a GREAT man. Dick's involvement in the Lion's Club, Knights of Columbus, youth sports, and other worthwhile ventures will be missed by all. Your Dad's life on this Earth serves as a strong example of "selfless service to others". Be VERY PROUD of your Dad and all of the lives that he touched and the Christian example that he left for all of us to attempt to follow. God Bless You All. "They just don't come any better than Mr. Russell. He was Wills's Little League coach and one of my father's best friends. I know that he and dad are up in heaven having a chat at St. Peter's general store like they did so many times over the years at Rex's. I remember watching he and Mrs. Russell dancing down at the hall when I was a kid and thinking, "that's the kind of marriage I want." They just were so perfect together with that little kick in their dance step. It was obvious they adored each other. Compton has lost one of its best and our sympathies go out to all the Russell family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. " - Christine (Sterling) and Gary Senese - Posted: Friday, September 3, 2010

"To Mr. Russell, my first little league coach, and forever Mr. Russell. St. Clement's Shores, Compton, and St. Mary's County have a big gaping hole to fill. There will never be another Dick Russell. His family will carry on in his footsteps. He and Mrs. (Agnes) Russell were close friends of my dad and mom. They were regulars at the store. I think Donald's title "community servant" best describes his father. Always giving, but always particular. Hard on his kids, and hard on his players. If you worked in any way with Dick Russell you felt his high standards. In everything. If you did something, you had to do it right. His way. Learn to slide into second base. Do it until you get it right. Learn to bunt. Do it until you get it right. The fundamentals. Get them right. They are what matters. They win games. More importantly, they are life lessons you never, ever forget. Thank you, Mr. Russell. You taught us all well. We will miss you. But we will never forget your lessons." - Bobby & Wendy Schaller - Posted: Friday, September 3, 2010

"Dickie, Bobby, Donald, and the other relatives of Dick Russell. You all, and the county, has lost another of it's "finest". I remember Dick from little league down the shores a bit over 50 years ago. I played for the Leonardtown Red Sox, but those St. Clements Shores Yankees were tough with Dick on their side. I remember Dickie, David, later Bobby and Donald playing hardball back then. I remember taking basic training with David and learning of his death in vietnam. I remember Dick taking it hard, and rightfully so. But I also remember Dick, in spite of everything, continuing to do good things for the community, and especially his family. Godspeed to you Dick Russell." - frankie tippett - Posted: Thursday, September 2, 2010

"To Dick's family: The Abell family sends it's thoughts and prayers to all of you. The neighborhood, our parish family at St. Francis Xavier & the entire community has lost a wonderful, caring, giving person. The Abell and Russell families have known each other for generations, growing up together in Compton. Seeing Dick come out of the Shores, turning up Bayside road, heading to the family farm, has been a familiar site for me for a long time. He always threw his hand way up as all good friends and neighbors continue to do. What a coincidence that the Lord decided to take your Dad to heaven the very same day he took my Dad, Perry Abell, eight years ago. Our Dad's were special men. I'm sure they are catching up on everything in heaven and will continue to watch over all of us. God bless you all." - Loretta (Abell) Vallandingham - Posted: Thursday, September 2, 2010

"Dick worked with Red Neidhold and me for many years as a contractor after he retired from civil service. We were a three-person office and became life-long friends. Dick always stocked our refrigerator with Diet Coke and would "audit" the coke jar each week to make sure we paid our 40 cents. Red knew Dick was listening for change to drop in the jar each time he took a coke, so he'd just shake the jar so it made noise if he didn't have the coins, then wink at me as he walked by. Needless to say, the jar never passed Dick's weekly audit. Those were good times. Rest in peace Dick." - Lynn Quigley - Posted: Thursday, September 2, 2010
