Stephanie Louise “Steff” Abell, 64, of Hollywood, MD died March 1, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by her family and friends. Born August 22, 1945 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of the late James Allen and Phiney Alvey Cusic. She was the loving wife to Floyd Abell whom she married on March 21, 1964 at St. John’s Church in Hollywood, MD. She was the sister of Jo Allen Mattingly of Hollywood, MD, the late James Anthony Cusic of Hollywood, MD, Larry (Marica) Cusic of Omaha, NE, Jane Hier (Mickey) of Pittsford, VT and Kevin (Charlene) Cusic of Hollywood, MD. Stephanie graduated from Leonardtown High School in 1963 and attended college to become a dental assistant. She became the assistant of the late Dr. Rolla Burk and was later employed by Dr. Blair Wood. She retired after many years of service in September of 2009 due to acute illness. Stephanie and Floyd did not have children of their own, but after Floyd’s sister Betty Lou Wathen passed away they helped raise Edie, Cheri, Lisa, Susie and Janie and thought of them as their own children. Family always came first with Stephanie and she had such great love for her nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She enjoyed Ocean City, gambling, reading and relaxing on the porch at the family home on Patuxent River. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 4, 2010 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where prayers will be said at 7:00PM with Deacon Lou Koeniger officiating.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 5, 2010, in St. John’s Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD at 11:00 AM with Fr. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Christopher Cusic, Timmy Mattingly, Harold Anderson, Jr., Philip Cusic, Steve Cook, Patrick Woodburn and Michael Miedzinski. Contributions may be sent to the St. John’s Francis Regis Catholic Church and School, 43950 St. John’s Road, Hollywood, MD 20636.

"It is in times like this we try and make sense of what and why things happened. We do not seem to know the what or the why, only that it happened. It is surreal that, in these times, that friends and families join together to help each other get through these tough times. We need to remember that had Stephanie not been born and lived her life, we would not have had this time of grief. When a person makes such a positive impact on not only their life but on so many others as well, that we truely learn the meaning of grief. Stephanie gave so much of her life helping others as well as enjoying her own life, that it is fitting we grieve her passing but smile and remember that her life was shared by so many. She indeed had an impact on this world and her passion for her life as well as the lives of those who surrounded her will not be forgotten for generations to come. We thank her for her kindness and that always smiling face. We thank her for always being there to help us through our grief. We thank her for sharing her life with us all. "

"To my dear sister, I cannot believe that God has taken you home. I felt it wasn't your time we had so much to do, not only I have lost my sister, but my very very best friend, we have stuck together thru thick and thin, had our up's and down's and they didn't last very long, I love you with all my heart."

" We are sorry for your loss, but don't be sad. Be happy that you had this wonderful person in your life, yes you will miss her. She is always close by because as we leave this Earth we leave bits and pieces around. Guess what; to prove this point, watch when you or someone you knew will say "Aunt Steff use to do that!!!!!" Keep your head in prayer and I will pray for you too. God bless, The Coffy Family"

"Floyd, JoAllen, Kevin, and family: Oh my, what a lovely service at St. John's for our dear Stephanie. A very emotional service (especially the meditation) but so very special with the family part-taking in the service and such wonderful words spoke by Father Ray! It was truly a powerful tribute to her and with the church full it definitely showed what a special lady she was to so many. She will be SO missed. May memories help fill the void and ache in your hearts! "

"Dear Floyd and family, I am honored and blessed to have had Stephanie as a friend. She truly embodied the meaning of the word. Our friendship began the morning that we both started to work for Dr. Burk and Frances mom had passed that morning. We put our hearts together and the bond began. Stepahine was always a rock for me and my family through the critical illness of my son. Her voice on the phone checking in to see how were were would always lift my spirits beyond measure. During a 20 year freindship we shared the good and the bad, births, deaths, weddings, and everything in between. How I value those Friday morning shopping trips to Hechts when Seff would laugh hysterically while I tried on hats. She was never without an opinion but you always knew that her opinions were based in truth and love. Seff and I worked side by side for many many years with Dr. Burk and then with Dr. Wood. Oh, the fun we had but the underlying theme was Steff's desire to help everyone and lighten their burden's. She lived that, not only in her work life but most importantly with her family and freinds. Steff gave to everyone and left a piece of her heart. Her family was her life and her world and I was honored to be included in many family events. Her love for her family was boundless. The same holds true for the work family. I will miss you so much Steff, but everytime I hear Boot Scootin Boogie, I'll know you are trying to get my attention. Thank you for your love, friendship and memories that will never die. Rest peacfully my dear friend. I love you."

"Floyd and family, My deepest condolences to you all. I came to know this wonderful lady when I went to the dentist 45 years ago for the first time in my life. Here I was all 250 pounds of me sitting in the chair waiting for Dr. Burk to do his thing and I was scared to death. Well this gal came over to me with that beautiful smile of hers and held my hand the whole time I was in the chair. I was just blown away by her kindness and got to know her better each time I went in. She helped to start the rescue squad up in Hollywood and I respected her so much for her efforts there.I can't begin to imagine your pain but know that this is one special angel watching over all of us especially her family. May she rest in peace with God."

""A best friend is a sister that destiny forgot to give you." Steff was truly a sister to both of us and a wonderful aunt to Ginger and Steve. We had many adventures together and those memories are forever locked in our hearts. She has begun this adventure without us; but there will come the day when we will once again hear that wonderful laugh and feel that warm embrace."

"Jo Allen, Floyd, and the entire Cusic and Abell family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all, and also with her many, many friends, like my sister, Joan, who are hurting also, as they have lost such a great friend of so many, many years. That in itself is a testimony of who she was, that her friendships go back over 50 years. Not many people can say they have so many friends from their chidlhood days. She lost the battle, but she is now in a much better place than the many loved ones she leaves behind. She was courageous and strong through it all, and will be missed by so many. My hopes for all of you, family and friends alike, is that the fond and funny memeories you have of Stephanie, will pull you through this time of sorrow, and devastating lose. God Bless and be with you all. "

Stephanie and I grew up together and spending the night as friends in grade school to double dating and enjoying our teenage years in high school (CLASS OF 63 )and later to Stephanie being in my wedding and being the godmother to our youngest daughter, sharing so many happy times as years passed. I will miss her greatly and feel blessed to have had her in my life our lives. We hope all her happy times and all the wonderful memories all the family share will help you to get through this time of grief and know she is in a much better place and hopefully saving us a place .
